It is sometimes confusing to know what Mandarin Chinese is. 汉语 (hanyu) literally means the language of the Han. It is the “common language” (普通话, putonghua) spoken in mainland China and Taiwan also called Mandarin. There are many other languages spoken in China like for example Cantonese, in the region of Guangdong and in Hongkong. While Taiwan and China mainland both speak Mandarin, they don’t use the same writing system. Taiwan uses traditional characters while China mainland uses simplified characters. Reversely Guangdong people speak Cantonese but use simplified Chinese characters while Hongkong people speak Cantonese but write in traditional Chinese… In Ginkgo Chinese, you will learn Mandarin and simplified Chinese.
